Butterfly Classroom (10 Children, Age 5)

Under Construction!!

Welcome to the Butterfly Room!

The Butterfly Room is our newest addition to the WCCC family. Established in September 2009, the Butterfly Room is an exclusive Reggio Emilia project work classroom.  Reggio Emilia is the intricate study of projects over a long period of time.  We take the children's interests, and we discover projects, field trips and experiments that can bring to the light the subject to be studied. The teacher and children focus on in depth studies of areas of interest, as well as, take copious amounts of field trips to further examine certain projects. This classroom consists of one teacher and 10 children accompanied by a part time afternoon teacher. The Butterflies choose their areas of interest, and they run with their projects for weeks or even months.  They also incorporate Kindergarten readiness, such as early reading, pre-math, writing and etc while studying their areas of interest.

The children have focused on projects such as:

  • the study of countries and flags-designing and making their own flag
  • studying different types of music, having families come in and make music with them, and making their own instruments
  • recycling, connecting recycling projects at school and home, with a field trip to Van Der Lind recycling center
  • Construction, building and design
  • they conducted many science experiments; mirror images, weight experiments, sink or float, light, and shadow experiments etc
  • Many in depth art projects with multiple meduims such as chalk, pastels, markers, paint, water colors, clay etc

Butterfly Class Guidelines:

  •  Please have your child at school by 9:00am.  By this time we will begin morning meeting and start with the richest part of the curriculum for the day.

  • Please try and keep drop-offs short.

  • If you feel that your child needs a little more transition time, reading a couple of books or engaging them in another activity is recommended.

  •  No toys from home, except on Friday’s for “show & share” time

  • Please refer to your handbook for our center’s policies, such as the inclement weather policy and sick policy; these policies are strictly enforced by licensing and in the classroom.

  • When dropping off & picking up your child please remember to sign them in/out with the time and your initials on the second page of the clipboard.

  • In this classroom we plan to be taking at least two field trips a month.  It is important that we have help from the parents for driving and chaperone purposes.  These trips will be very valuable learning experiences and will support the curriculum taking place in the classroom.  If you decide not to allow your child to participate in a particular trip you must find alternative care for them that day.  WCCC is not responsible for alternative care.

What to bring to the Butterfly classroom:

  • One full change of weather appropriate clothing, including socks & underwear.  One extra pair of shoes is recommended.
  • One soft sleep toy that fits in your child’s cubby
  • One water bottle (with a cap/lid that closes)
  • One fitted sheet and one blanket for naptime.  These items will be sent home weekly to be washed.   Your child’s sheet and blanket will need to be labeled with a permanent marker.
  • Sunscreen.  This needs to be applied at home in the morning and will be reapplied at school in the afternoons.  Your child’s sunscreen should be labeled with a permanent marker.
  • A Family Photo
